We saw a gap in how people do wine tours. You basically have two choices. You can take a tour on a bus with many other people which will restrict where you can go, or you take a limo, with a driver who may or may not know very much about wine. What we are offering is something better than either. It is a small private tour, (maximum 6 people, no minimum) that can be customized to go anywhere that you would like, or you can sit back and enjoy as we take you to our favorites.
What we have discovered is that while most people go to wineries around the valley, there is actually a second set of wineries off the beaten path, or in the surrounding mountains. Many of these are people's homes, which make very small batches of hand-crafted wines. Even on the busiest days, as we retreat into the mountains or back-roads, you will discover hidden wineries that don't exist on the maps. This is what we consider the "idealistic" Napa.
©2007 Max Napa ToursWith our tours, we don’t follow a set schedule and go to the same places every day like most other companies. Instead we rely on a pool of over one hundred different wineries, and as the day goes on, we can tailor the tour as we learn which type of wine you like. The day is customized as we go, so you can stay anywhere as long as you would like and don’t have to worry feeling rushed to make the next winery appointment on time. On the other hand, we can always plan a day out in advance if you have specific requests.
We do our tours in new Ford Expeditions, complete with comfortable leather seating for six, rear climate control, and privacy tinting. Larger vehicles can also be arranged.
The small size of our group enables us to go to all types of wineries; from some of the most nationally known and premiere establishments, to places so small that we will be tasting wine in their dining room or back porch. You can observe the entire wine making process, from the vineyard to the bottle. We pick up from over 250 hotels within San Francisco, and then depart for wine country via the Golden Gate Bridge. Tour length is about eight to nine hours.
Napa Valley is separated from Sonoma Valley by a mountain range,
called by its highest peak, Mt. Veeder. Up here the vines are
“dry-farmed” meaning that they get no water for the entire season.
This forces the roots to go down very deep, often in excess of forty
feet (15 meters). Los Carneros and Mt. Veeder are just two of the
Valley’s ten appellations. Other noteworthy appellations are Stag’s
Leap and Rutherford, which are known for world-class Cabernet
Sauvignon, and Spring Mountain, known for producing top quality merlot.
The Napa Valley makes wines in a distinct style that is not found anywhere else. They take advantage of the long growing season and produce wines that taste very ripe, and full-bodied, usually with 1-2% residual sugar. They often believe in tasting more “fruit” and and less oak. The wines aren’t cheap however, with some of the regions best wines costing as much as a Barolo or Brunello di Montalcino.
Napa Valley is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, which continually
stand out as some of the world's best. The wines are crafted in a
style, which enables them to be consumed at three or four years in
age. This contrasts the Chateaux in France, or wines from Barolo,
which reach their potential after ten years or more. The full ageing
potential is not yet known, as many of the wineries are relatively
new. One thing that is certain however is that the wines will only get
better as vintners become more experienced and more is learned about
the region.
MaxNapaTours is now able to ship your wine home to you! At the end of the day, leave your wine with us and have it delivered to your door. Most States are between $30 and $45 per case.
